Chad Pietroniro (#47) of HC Meran/o Pircher, time 13:33, made contact with an opponent deemed as Boarding IIHF Rule 41. Based on the video evidence, it is determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 1 – ‘Careless’ – insufficient attention or thought to avoid harm or error. Liable to happen as a consequence of, by intending to affect an opponent through a reactionary or accidental motion or the incident is deemed careless causing negligence.

Saturday night, March 15, in Meran, Meran forward #47 Chad Pietroniro was involved in an incident on Ritten D'Man #68 Sebastiano Soracreppa deemed as boarding, causing an apparent inury.

As the video shows, Soracreppa at the top of the circle receives a deflected puck and skates in the direction of the boards. Pietroniro, approaching from the slot area, is focused on Soracreppa the entire time and delivers a forceful check into the boards.

This is boarding.

It is important to note, from the moment Soracreppa is in possession of the puck, Pietroniro is focused on him, skating from a backside presence, at a high rate of speed. At the height of the hash-marks Pietroniro is located directly behind Soracreppa. It can be assumed, Soracreppa realizing he has limited ice, alters slightly in the direction of the board, where Pietroniro delivered a high hit, overly forceful and to the upper back on a player unable to protect himself. Soracreppa was propelled head first into the boards, causing an apparent injury. If Pietroniro wants to deliver a legal hit on that play he needs to skate to get to a position, where he can deliver a hit in the shoulder/hip area which does not cause his opposing player to fall head first into the boards.

Effective immediately, the Alps Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Chad Pietroniro
for 1 game.

To summarize:

  • This is boarding
  • Forceful and reckless
  • Not a repeat offender
