Julian Zwerger (#14) of EC Bregenzerwald, time 57:04, made contact with an opponent deemed as Charging IIHF Rule 42. Based on the video evidence, it is determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 1 – ‘Careless’ – insufficient attention or thought to avoid harm or error. Liable to happen as a consequence of, by intending to affect an opponent through a reactionary or accidental motion or the incident is deemed careless causing negligence.

Wednesday night, January 8, in Dornbirn, Bregenzerwald forward #14 Julian Zwerger delivered a hit on Kitzbühel forward #3 Johannes Tschurnig that is deemed Charging.

As the video shows, Kitzbühel entered the attacking zone with puck possession. Tschurnig missed an intended pass which immediately lead to following the puck. As he picked up the puck and skated up the ice along the boards, Zwerger skating in from the blue line, recognized Tschurnig's skating path, picked up speed and delivered a forceful hit, where his feet left the ice.

This is charging.

It is important to note, these types of incidents can most often be sufficiently penalized by the on ice game officials. What raises this incident to the level of supplementary discipline is the force and the elevation into the hit. Zwerger had plenty of time and options to minimize the hit and make sure he does not elevate. With the combination of elevation and force, the hit is delivered to the opposing player where his head becomes part of the contact between Zwerger and the boards. The hit did cause an apparent injury.

Effective immediately, the Alps Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Julian Zwerger for 1 game.

To summarize:

  • This is charging
  • Elevation into the hit
  • Not a repeat offender
