One Game Suspension for Luciano Zandegiacomo

Luciano Zandegiacomo (#22) of Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan, time 30:23, made contact with an opponent deemed as Boarding (IIHF Rule 41). Based on the video evidence, it is determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline – Category 1 – “Careless”.

Thursday night, February 19, in Sisak, Sterzing forward #22 Luciano Zandegiacomo was involved in an incident deemed as Boarding on Sisak player #91 Alan Lizatovic resulting in a minor penalty being assessed on the ice.

As the video shows, Lizatovic gains puck possession along the boards and turns towards the wall in order to make a play. In doing so, Lizatovic is in a vulnerable position with his body oriented in close proximity and toward the boards. Zandegiacomo approaches the play and initiates body contact while Lizatovic is in this vulnerable posture, driving him carelessly into the boards. This is Boarding.

While the overall force of the hit is not excessive, the opponent’s vulnerable position near the boards makes this contact dangerous. In such situations, the checking player must recognize the opponent’s exposed posture and adjust accordingly. Zandegiacomo had sufficient time and space to choose a safer angle of approach, reduce the force of contact, or disengage entirely. Instead, he continues on a direct trajectory that results in the opponent being propelled dangerously into the boards.

As a result, and effective immediately, the Alps Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Luciano Zandegiacomo (#22) for 1 game.
