One game suspension for Ryan Valentini

Ryan Valentini (#9) of Asiago, time 54:36, was involved in an incident deemed as Slashing IIHF Rule 61. Based on the video evidence, it is determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline Category 1– ‘Careless’.

Tuesday night, September 22, in Asiago, Asiago forward #9 Ryan Valentini was involved in an incident deemed as Slashing against Klagenfurt D’Man #23 Gerrit Böhs.

Following the initial incident involving Böhs and Valentini, Böhs becomes involved in another confrontation with an opposing player. While Böhs is engaged in this separate confrontation, Valentini approaches and uses his stick to deliver a slashing motion, making contact with Böhs.

This is Slashing.
The video shows that the incident occurs during a stoppage in play. At the time of the slash, Böhs is engaged in a separate confrontation with another opposing player and is not involved in any confrontation with Valentini. Valentini nevertheless uses his stick against Böhs and makes contact with him. The sequence of events suggests that Valentini’s slashing action was a reaction to Böhs’ preceding action against him. While this may explain the context of the incident, it does not justify the subsequent use of the stick against an opponent. The use of the stick in this manner is unnecessary and avoidable. The action is unrelated to any ongoing hockey play and occurs while Böhs is engaged with another opponent. Valentini has the opportunity to disengage from the situation but instead uses his stick against Böhs. The action creates an unnecessary and avoidable risk of contact and injury to the opponent. Although no apparent injury results from the contact, the use of the stick in this manner demonstrates a careless disregard for the safety of the opponent.

As a result, and effective immediately, the Alps Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Ryan Valentini for 1 game.
