Terrance Amorosa (#21) of the Rittner Buam SkyAlps, time 31:24, made contact with an opponent deemed as Spearing, IIHF Rule 62. Based on the video evidence, it is determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 1 – ‘Careless’ – insufficient attention or thought to avoid harm or error. Liable to happen as a consequence of, by intending to affect an opponent through a reactionary or accidental motion or the incident is deemed careless causing negligence.

Saturday night, March 9, in Ritten, Ritten D'Man #21 Terrance Amorosa was involved in an incident, deemed as spearing on Bregenzerwald D'Man #93 Henri Auvinen, resulting in no apparent injury.

As the video shows, Ritten enters the attacking zone. While receiving a pass from his teammate Terrance Amorosa gets pushed by Henri Auvinen, what takes away a scoring chance from Amorosa. After getting up in the corner, Amorosa skates in front of the net and made forceful contact with is stick to the groin area of Auvinen.

This is spearing.

It is important to note, Auvinen in delivering the push did get in contact with Amorosa before the spear. The push Auvinen delivered to Amorosa doesn't allow Amorosa to make a retaliation on his opponent, who in addition is not aware of the coming contact. What causes this play to rise to the level of supplementary discipline is the action of leading with his stick on an unsuspecting opponent, the area of the body where the stick contacted and the forcefulness of contact. This is not accidental or inadvertent contact, this is not contact that the opponent can or should prepare for and this is not what a stick is intended for in the game of hockey.

Effective immediately, the Alps Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Terrance Amorosa for 1 game.

To summarize:

  • This is spearing
  • Direct contact to opponents groin area
  • Not a repeat offender
