One point for Austria against Latvia

Austria lost in the fifth game of the IIFH Worlds against Latvia with 3:4/SO. With four points, Team Austria is now three points ahead of bottom placed Great Britain. The deciding match to stay in the league will take place on Monday at 19:20. Italy still has to wait for their first World Championship win. Against Germany they conceded a clear 4:9 defeat.

After a goalless first 20 minutes, Austria started perfectly into the middle period. It took only 70 seconds before Benjamin Nissner of Salzburg scored the lead. The Latvians remained unfazed by the deficit and first equalized in the sixth minute. Again, just over four minutes later, they even managed to score the lead. This time Austria had to answer and did so again just one and a half minutes after falling behind. Dominique Heinrich scored in the power play. For the 31-year-old defender it was the second goal at this World Championships. About four minutes before the end of the second period Latvia scored again.

In the final period, Austria clearly set the tone from the beginning and created numerous great chances. After a little more than six minutes they scored the equalizer. A shot by Kilian Zündel was deflected by Thomas Raffl. Thus, the third goal of the evening was also scored by a player from champion Salzburg. Subsequently, no decision was made by either side in regular playing time. Also in the overtime no goal was scored. In the shootout, two players from Latvia were successful. Only Dominique Heinrich scored for the red-white-red team. With four points, Austria is still in seventh place in the standings. Before the deciding match for staying in the league will be played against bottom of the table Great Britain on Monday at 19:20, Austria will meet host Finland tomorrow, Saturday, at 15:20.



Italy again without a chance against Germany

As in the 2021 World Cup, Italy lost clearly to Germany with 4:9. In the fifth match, it was their fifth defeat. Italy remains in seventh place in the standings. At the bottom of the table is Kazakhstan, which conceded a narrow 3:4 defeat against Slovakia. Italy will challenge Slovakia tomorrow, Saturday, at 19:20, before the "Azzurri" face Kazakhstan in the deciding match for staying in the league on Monday, at 15:20.
