Olimpija Ljubljana returned to the top of the win2day ICE Hockey League standings on Friday with a clear victory, while HC Pustertal prevailed in a dramatic South Tyrol derby against Bolzano. Salzburg and Budapest also celebrated overtime wins.
Olimpija Ljubljana reclaimed the lead in the standings with a dominant performance. The Slovenians led the Steinbach Black Wings Linz 8-1 after 40 minutes and eventually won 8-4. Mehle, Halbert, Meyer, and Brennan put the game firmly in their control in the first period. At 0-4, Linz goaltender Höneckl was replaced by Martin Reder. The hosts kept up their attacking momentum, with Mehle scoring again just before the second intermission to make it 8-1. In the final period, 17-year-old goalie Gal Hebar made his first ICE appearance. The still 11th-place Upper Austrians pulled three goals back but were clearly beaten in the end.
A thrilling 199th South Tyrolean derby was witnessed by 3,100 fans in the sold-out Intercable Arena. The visitors from Bolzano started strongly, taking a 2-0 lead in the first intermission thanks to goals from Mantenuto and McClure. Pustertal fought back in the second period to tie the game, but HCB regained the lead through Misley in the 44th minute. A quick double strike by Rok Tičar within two minutes turned the game in the home team's favor. Shortly after, Bowlby made it 5-3, sealing the victory in the 53rd minute. For the now third-placed HCP, it was already their second consecutive derby win.
EC Red Bull Salzburg got back to winning ways with a hard-fought home victory over the Vienna Capitals. The Capitals took the lead in both the first and second periods, but the hosts – who lost captain Thomas Raffl early to a game misconduct penalty – equalized each time. In the 33rd minute, Antonitsch scored shorthanded to make it 3-2 for the visitors, his fourth goal of the season. Baltram tied the game in the final period, before Michael Raffl secured the win for the fourth-placed Red Bulls in overtime after just 14 seconds.
In the first season meeting between the Moser Medical Graz99ers and FTC-Telekom, the Hungarian side came out on top. Sofron opened the scoring after just 24 seconds. Despite numerous chances and clear dominance, Graz failed to find the equalizer in the first period. In the second, Laskawy doubled the lead before Feldner, with his first goal in a 99ers jersey, reduced the deficit to 1-2 shortly before the intermission. Swaney leveled the game in the final period, and the hosts pressed for the winner but hit the post several times. In overtime, Brady Shaw struck in the 62nd minute to give FTC-Telekom the victory.
