Release from 24.11.2024
A goal-filled Sunday round in the win2day ICE Hockey League (44 goals in 5 games) featured only home wins. EC Red Bull Salzburg and Steinbach Black Wings Linz extended their winning streaks, with both teams securing six consecutive victories (including Salzburg's two CHL games). Meanwhile, Hydro Fehérvár AV19 reclaimed the top spot in the standings with a tight win over Moser Medical Graz99ers. EC-KAC ended their home drought on Sunday evening, while Asiago recorded their second win of the weekend.
EC Red Bull Salzburg extends streak
Including their two Champions Hockey League quarterfinal wins, the Red Bulls celebrated their sixth straight victory. However, the reigning champions had to battle hard against HC TIWAG Innsbruck. Salzburg jumped to a two-goal lead in the first period, but the Sharks fought back, with Mark Rassell tying it up with a brace by the 50th minute. In the final stretch, the Red Bulls showed their composure: newcomer Scott Kosmachuk scored the game-winner in his second game for Salzburg, sealing the 4–3 win.
Black Wings are the hottest team in the league
Steinbach Black Wings Linz claimed their sixth straight league win on Sunday evening in a high-scoring showdown against EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV. This gives Linz the longest active winning streak in the league. The hosts from Upper Austria came out flying, taking a 2–0 lead within the first five minutes and extending it to 3–1 by the end of the first period. The Villach Eagles clawed their way back in the second period, tying the game 4–4 in the 31st minute. However, Linz proved more clinical than Villach down the stretch, securing a 6–4 victory. Brian Lebler and Shawn St-Amant both registered two-goal nights. In the standings, Linz narrowed the gap to the fourth-place HCB Südtirol to just one point.
Fehérvár back on top
Hydro Fehérvár AV19 was briefly dethroned from the league’s top spot by HCB Südtirol Alperia on Saturday night. But after just one night in second place, the Hungarian side reclaimed the lead. Their matchup against Moser Medical Graz99ers was anything but easy. Graz took the lead three times throughout the game—once in each period—but Fehérvár always had an answer. Anže Kuralt delivered a standout performance, putting Fehérvár ahead for the first time in the 55th minute and later completing his hat trick with an empty-netter. The 5–4 win gave Fehérvár a two-point cushion over second-place Bolzano. The Graz99ers, on the other hand, slipped to fourth after their second straight loss.
KAC ends home losing streak
After a 5–2 victory over Pioneers Vorarlberg on October 12, EC-KAC endured four consecutive home losses. Nearly 1.5 months later, they ended that drought with a 6–4 win over HC Pustertal. The hosts came out strong, leading 2–0 just six minutes into the game. The second period saw KAC fully in control, with Matt Fraser increasing the lead to 5–1 while completing his hat trick within the first 40 minutes. The Wolves refused to quit, though: Alex Petan scored twice in just 2.5 minutes early in the final frame, and Ole Andersen added a late goal to bring Pustertal within one. However, Jan Mursak’s empty-netter sealed the 6–4 victory for KAC.
Asiago celebrates second straight win
Migross Supermercati Asiago Hockey, coming off six consecutive losses, picked up two wins this weekend. Following an overtime win against the Pioneers, the yellow-and-red squad followed up with a victory over Olimpija Ljubljana on Sunday. The Northern Italians laid the foundation for their success in the opening period, even though the Slovenians opened the scoring. Asiago responded with three goals in just 80 seconds. The hosts managed to defend their lead for the rest of the game, earning a 5–3 victory.
