Sabres and Eagles start successfully in the win2day AWHL

The new season of the win2day Austrian Women’s Hockey League began on Saturday with two exciting games. Defending champions Sabres St. Pölten opened with a 4-2 road victory over the Lakers Kärnten. The Salzburg Eagles also celebrated a strong start, defeating league newcomers VSV Lady Hawks in a high-scoring clash, 6-4. In the European Women’s Hockey League, Budapest Jegkorong Akademia, HK PSRZ Bratislava, and EVB Eagles South Tyrol all recorded wins.

The official AWHL opener saw Lakers Kärnten face off against Sabres St. Pölten. Although Petra Soldic gave the hosts the lead on the power play, the reigning champions stormed back with three goals in the middle frame. In the 46th minute, Selena Pugh provided the decisive tally to make it 4-1, with the Lakers only able to narrow the gap to 2-4 late on.

In Saturday’s second game, the Salzburg Eagles earned a 6-4 victory over the VSV Lady Hawks. Gabrielle Davidson was the standout performer, notching two goals and one assist to lead her team to victory. Despite the loss, the Carinthian newcomers showcased their potential.

Thrilling battles also took place in the European Women’s Hockey League on Saturday. HK PSRZ Bratislava secured a narrow 3-2 home win against the KSV Highlanders. The Slovak side built an early 3-0 lead in the first period before the team from Styria mounted a late comeback in the final frame. The equalizer, however, never came, allowing Bratislava to claim their first win following an opening defeat.

The EVB Eagles South Tyrol took control early against the Graz99ers Huskies. Just 54 seconds into the game they were on the scoreboard, and they went on to claim a clear 3-0 victory. Goaltender Alice Philbert earned a shutout.

In the Hungarian derby between Budapest Jegkorong Akademia and MAC Budapest, the hosts showed composure under pressure. After falling behind early, they turned the game around and held on for a 2-1 victory.
