Sabres take the lead in the AWHL

On Saturday, the Sabres St. Pölten won their first matchup of the season against the KSV Highlanders 4–1, taking over the top spot in the win2day Austrian Women’s Hockey League.

In the European Women’s Hockey League, the Lakers Kärnten won their first meeting with Tauron Metropolia Silesia. Aisulu Almaty and HK PSRZ Bratislava also celebrated home victories.

The Sabres dominated the game against the Highlanders for long stretches and took the lead just five minutes in through Ashley Taciuk. Early in the second period, Lena Artner made it 2–0. The visitors cut the deficit with a shorthanded goal, but two more third‑period strikes sealed the win for the Lower Austrians. With this victory, the reigning champions of the win2day Austrian Women’s Hockey League also replaced the Styrians at the top of the standings.

In the European Women’s Hockey League, Lakers Kärnten came out on top in their first duel with Tauron Metropolia Silesia. Kelsey Soccio opened the scoring with the only goal of the first period. Valentina Ropatsch then added a brace to make it 3–0, and the Lakers cruised to a comfortable 4–1 victory. The two teams will meet again on Sunday in Katowice.

Aisulu Almaty celebrated a 4–1 win over Budapest Jegkorong Akademia. With a hat‑trick, Malika Aldabergenova was the standout player of the night, scoring twice on the power play. The reigning EWHL champions thus strengthened their hold on second place.

HK PSRZ Bratislava earned a well‑deserved 4–0 home win over the VSV Lady Hawks. After a scoreless first period, the Slovak side went ahead in the 32nd minute, and Janka Hlinkova doubled the lead shortly before the second intermission. In the final period, the hosts added two more goals, while goaltender Zuzana Tomeckova recorded a shutout.
