Release from 13.03.2022
The EC Red Bull Salzburg and Hydro Fehérvár AV19 each celebrated their third win in the quarterfinals of the win2day ICE Hockey League on Sunday and thus secured match pucks. The spusu Vienna Capitals and EC GRAND Immo VSV also earned home victories - both teams took the lead in their "best-of-seven" series for the first time.
EC Red Bull Salzburg also won the third game in the quarterfinals of the win2day ICE Hockey League against Tesla Orli Znojmo with 5:3 and thus leads in the "best-of-seven" series with 3:0. Almost 2,000 enthusiastic spectators saw a highly exciting encounter in the Salzburg Eisarena, in which the home side secured a 2:0 lead through Nissner (5th) and Dalhuisen (14th). Then the guests became stronger and after Tomas Svoboda got them on the scoreboard in the first period, Younan even equalised in the 28th minute. After Brennan had given Salzburg the lead again, the visitors equalised again, but then the home side went one better in an exciting final phase with true playoff character: Brennan scored the game-winner with his second goal and Florian Baltram then increased the lead to 5:3 from close range.
Hydro Fehérvár AV19 also secured a 3:0 series lead. The Hungarians got off to a lightning start in their third quarterfinal clash with HC Pustertal, with Braeden Shaw scoring after just 31 seconds to take the lead. Barely 13 minutes later, the 29-year-old forward completed his hat-trick - his shot was deflected to make it 3:1 in the meantime. Dante Hannoun brought the visitors back within one goal in the 28th minute, but 17 seconds before the second period Alex Petan scored with a two man advantage to make it 4:2. In the final period Fehervar didn't let anything go, Josh Atkinson scored again on the powerplay to make it 5:2.
Capitals turn series against KAC
Although the KAC only had to accept the series equaliser on Friday, the reigning champions came to Vienna with a lot of self-confidence, as the Carinthians have won all three of their season duels in the capital so far. In an even first period, veteran Thomas Koch scored the only goal in front of 5,300 fans to give the visitors the lead. In the middle period, however, the Viennese turned the game in their favour: Lowry (23rd) scored on the power play and Sascha Bauer got away from the KAC defence shortly before the end of the period - for the 27-year-old Viennese it was the first playoff goal in his 41st postseason game. After the restart, the open exchange continued. Matt Fraser equalised on power play, but the KAC could not make use of another power play opportunity. Shortly afterwards Nicolai Meyer made it 4:3 and in the 54th minute Niki Hartl, who extended his scoring streak to five games, even gave the home side a two-goal lead with a perfect finish. The KAC came back with another Fraser goal, but Meyer scored an empty netter to make it 5:3.
VSV wins highest-scoring playoff game
Villach and Ljubljana played a historic playoff match, in which it seemed for a long time as if the Slovenians were on the winning track. But the Carinthians always had an answer ready. After Bastien Maia's early goal (4th), Travis Oleksuk equalised 15 seconds before the first period break. Shortly after the restart, Olimpija scored a double. After John Hughes halved the deficit, Ziga Pance (29th) restored the two-goal lead. But Bacher, Kosmachuk and Richter turned the game in favour of the Carinthians with three goals within five minutes - 5:4 after 40 minutes. But this time the Slovenians did not let up and Leclerc equalised in the power play. Another brace by Rick Schofield and Derek Joslin within 32 seconds should have brought the decision. Anton Karlsson scored an empty netter for the final score of 8:5. The game was one of the highest-scoring playoff games since the league was newly founded in 2000/01. 13 goals were scored twice before, both times Villach was involved (Zell am See - VSV 4:9 and KAC - VSV 5:8; both 2000/01).
