The EC Red Bull Salzburg won their Champions Hockey League round of 16 second leg against Rouen Dragons 3:1 on Wednesday, but the bet-at-home ICE Hockey League side missed out on advancing to the CHL quarter-finals after a 3:0 away defeat in France.

After the cancellation of the Round of 16 return game between Lukko Rauma and HCB Südtirol Alperia, the CHL’s Covid-19 committee has decided that only the result of the first game will be taken into consideration. Since Lukko Rauma won the game 3:1, the Finnish team will advance to the quarter-finals.

EC Red Bull Salzburg started full of pressure and quickly created good chances. Although the hosts failed to score the hoped-for quick goal, they kept the intensity high. In the 16th minute, the Red Bulls took the lead after all: on the first power play of the game, captain Thomas Raffl scored from close range. Salzburg continued to create chances in the middle period, but the French were always dangerous on the counterattack. As the pressure of the bet-at-home ICE Hockey League team increased from minute to minute, Raffl (36th) deflected a Kanzig shot to make it 2:0.

Matt McIlvane's team remained patient and made it 3:0 in the 50th minute through Jan-Mikael Järvinen - with this goal the Red Bulls equalized in the total score. But Salzburg could not take advantage of the momentum. Rolands Vigners scored a late goal for the French. The hosts tried everything and also had chances in the last minute with 6-on-4 on the ice. But the home side was denied a goal and overtime.
