EC Red Bull Salzburg failed to reach the quarterfinals of the Champions Hockey League. Despite a passionate fightback in the return leg against Ingolstadt, the decisive goals needed to overturn the deficit from the first meeting ultimately did not materialize. Across both games, the German side prevailed with an aggregate score of 9:6.

Salzburg started with strong pressure and reduced the deficit early when Brandon Coe collected a deflected puck and calmly fired it into the corner. Shortly before the end of the first period, the hosts struck again: Nash Nienhuis sent a long-distance shot through traffic to make it 2:1.

In the second period, Salzburg continued to battle back. Travis St. Denis scored in a bizarre sequence during a delayed penalty – a video review confirmed the goal for a 3:1 scoreline in this game, reducing the overall deficit to two goals.

Salzburg kept pushing in the third period. However, the German team scored next. With the goalie pulled and on a power play, Mario Huber restored the hosts’ two-goal lead. Despite significant pressure and clear advantages in play, the additional two goals required never came, before an empty-netter sealed the aggregate decision in Ingolstadt’s favor.

Salzburg thus exits the current CHL season but showed great character and an impressive comeback effort in the second leg.
