Champions Hockey League, Round of 16:
EC Red Bull Salzburg – Rouen Dragons 5:1 (2:0,1:1,2:0)
(Aggregate Score 8:4)
Referees: HEJDUK/JERABEK,
After the three all draw two weeks earlier, Salzburg knew they were in a huge chance of creating history by advancing to the next round. An early goal was always going to be key, and while Rouen rode out a spell of pressure from the Red Bulls early on, the deadlock was eventually broken by the home side at 11:19 as Ryan Duncan was allowed too much space in the slot to fire home. With 1:03 left on the opening period, Brant Harris' shot too hot for Pintarič to handle to double the lead. Rouen managed to get themselves a lifeline with 27 minutes played as Joris Bedin poked the puck home to halve the deficit. However, the Red Bulls went 3-1 ahead only 47 seconds later through Tommy Raffl and that scoreline held until the end of the period.
The next goal was then going to be crucial, Bobby Raymond making the game safe at 56:35 with a rocket of a wrist shot. The scoring didn't end there as Rouen pulled the goalie to try to find a way back into the series, but Mario Huber unselfishly passed to Ryan Duncan for the empty-netter to make it 5-1 on the night and 8-4 on aggregate.
Goals RBS: Duncan (12./pp, 57./en), Harris (19.), Raffl (28.), Raymond (57.)
Goal ROU: Bedin (27.)
HC Pilsen - HCB Südtirol Alperia 6:2 (1:0, 4:2, 1:0)
(Aggregate Score 12:3)
Entering play with a five-goal lead on home ice, HC Pilsen seemed on their way to a spot in the Quarter-Finals and, thanks to four goals from Milan Gulaš and two-point efforts from Miroslav Indrák and Vojtěch Němec, their place was never seriously threatened. They won the return leg 6-2 to beat HC Bolzano 12-3 on aggregate.
Pilsen had some early chances but Jacob Smith made some big saves to keep the game scoreless, but in the 16th minute, Gulaš was given a penalty shot after being hauled down on a breakaway and he made no mistake, beating Smith over the pad. Now ahead by six with 40 minutes to play, Gulaš broke it wide open with two more goals early in the second period, and then Miroslav Preisinger made it a 4-0 game with a powerplay goal in the 26th minute. After Leyland Irving replaced Smith in the Bolzano goal, the visiting Foxes showed signs of life in the second half of the second period and got goals from Marco Insam and Brett Findlay, which were sandwiched around Gulaš’s fourth of the game, making him the fifth player to do so in the CHL. With nothing in doubt any longer, the teams played out the string in the third period, with Indrák adding a powerplay goal to round out the scoring.
Goals Pilsen: Gulaš (16. 22. 24. 34.), Preisinger (26./pp.), Indrák (52./pp.)
Goals HCB: Insam (29.), Findlay (34.)
