Salzburg wins first final game in overtime

EC Red Bull Salzburg won the first final game of the "best-of-7" series. The reigning champions prevailed 2:1 after overtime in Klagenfurt on Friday. Lucas Thaler scored the decisive goal in the 69th minute. The second game will take place on Sunday in Salzburg.

The KAC got off to the better start in the for the 17th consecutive time sold-out Heidi Horten Arena. Finn van Ee put the hosts ahead as early as the third minute. The Red Jackets forward appeared all alone in front of the visitors' goal and scored after an ideal pass from Nickl. The reigning champions were unimpressed and equalised in the first powerplay. Although the PP did not go according to plan at first, the visitors kept their cool - and Mario Huber (11th) finally scored with a one timer. After an intense period, the teams went into the first break at 1:1. Nothing changed in the middle period and the game remained even and exciting. Lucas Thaler was denied by goalkeeper Sebastian Dahm on Salzburg's best chance. The KAC, on the other hand, piled on the pressure in two powerplay situations but were unable to score - Robertson cleared the puck just before the line on one occasion. The Red Jackets initially set the tone in the third period. However, they could not score during a period of pressure and another powerplay. The home side was closer to scoring, but the game went into over time tied 1:1. Lucas Thaler finally scored the decisive goal in the 69th minute. Game two will take place on Sunday in Salzburg.
