Salzburg's overtime win not enough for early CHL qualification

Short text 518 CharactersPlain text

EC Red Bull Salzburg celebrated a narrow 3:2/OT home win against Olimpija Ljubljana in a hard-fought rescheduled game of the 16th round. However, the two points scored are not enough to secure a ticket for the Champions Hockey League ahead of time. This decision will therefore be made on the final matchday too. The second-placed team is currently two points ahead of third-placed Bolzano. Last week, league leaders EC-KAC were the first team of the win2day ICE Hockey League to qualify for the upcoming CHL campaign.

The defending champions of the win2day ICE Hockey League had a hard game against Olimpija Ljubljana. After 17 goalless minutes, Peter Schneider put Salzburg ahead in the powerplay. After the restart, the visitors equalized in the 23rd minute through Ziga Pance. There were no further goals in the second period, but it took just seven seconds after the restart before Benjamin Nissner put the home side ahead again. It was the center's 20th goal of the season. However, Olimpija had the right answer this time too. Robert Sabolic tied the game with five minutes remaining, meaning Salzburg did not get the three points they needed to qualify for the CHL ahead of time. In overtime, it was Scott Kosmachuk who finally secured the extra point for the Red Bulls, giving them a two-point lead over third-placed Bolzano ahead of the final matchday. On Friday, the South Tyroleans face Innsbruck at home, while Salzburg have to play at Fehérvár.
