Six road wins on Boxing Day

Six out of eight games on Boxing Day were decided by the visitors. The Rittner Buam and Migross Supermercati Asiago are the only home teams to celebrate a win on December 26. Asiago grinded out the two points in Penalty Shootout. The VEU Feldkirch won the derby and top game of the round against EHC Alge Elastic Lustenau with 3:2. HC Pustertal further increased their lead in Alps Hockey League.

The Cortina repeated the success of six days ago at the Olimpico against Milan. Second consecutive match of the red-blue team at home after the victory against the leaders Bruneck. The starting goalkeeper of the visitors was Luca Burzacca while Marco De Filippo, Massimo Cordiano, Michael Zanatta, Francesco Adami and Andrea Moser were absent. Devin Di Diomete gave the first advantage but immediate reaction from Milan that at the first powerplay realized a draw with the top-scorer of the team Edoardo Caletti (4 '). But then in the second part of the period Cortina was very determined with the special teams. First Luca Barnabò realized with a one-timer in superiority and always in superiority the visitors team scored 3: 1 with the Finnish Tuomas Vänttinen. In the second period Milan shortened the distances with Alex Petrov on short rejected. Then the home team tried to find the draw in a much more balanced period between the two teams. During the third time the Cortina was more concrete in front of the net in superiority: Luca Barnabò made the 4: 2 in powerplay. Two minutes later Devin Di Diomete, always in superiority, realized 5: 2.  The same Di Diomete fixed the score on 6:2 with an empty goal e for his hat-trick, after 57 minutes, for the Cortina who earned the 9th place in the standings.

The fans in Vorarlberg saw an intense first period with emotions running high sometimes. Bregenzerwald goalie Felix Beck and Kitzbühel netminder Ty Rimmer did a great job and kept a clean sheet in the first. Despite the Tirolese taking over command after the restart, the hosts opened the scoring when Christian Haidinger found the back of the net. Some defensive mistakes led to the equalizer by Christopher Feix and soon later Adam Havlik turned the game around on power play. While Rimmer had some more brilliant saves in the third, the Kitzbühel forwards also did their work. With five minutes to go Havlik added his second and former ECB player Peter Lenes made the game safe with an empty netter.

After two consecutive wins Klagenfurt suffered a tight home defeat against Ljubljana. The visitors got off a better start and had some early chances. It took until the 15th minute when Aljaž Chvatal deflected a Čepon shot for Olimpija's lead. Early in the second Fabian Hochegger missed Klagenfurt's best chance for an equalizer with a Ljubljana player stopping the puck in front of the goal line. Soon later Gal Koren doubled the lead but Simon Hämmerle instantly answered to make it a one-goal game again. With another second period goal, Sašo Rajsar put the guests 3:1 up. With three minutes to go the hosts pulled their goalie and the game became exciting again. KAC captain Markus Pirmann scored on a penalty shot but the Carinthians were not able to force overtime in the remaining 65 seconds.

South Tyrolean derby was played in Sterzing. Michael Messner (flu) and Tobias Kofler (injury) were absent for the Broncos. Teemu Virtala and Gregor Grossgasteiger were absent for the Wolves. Tommy Kruselburger (Broncos) and Simon Berger (Wolves) built the first occasions to score. Then minute after minute the yellowblack team grew in intensity as they realized the first advantage of the evening with a deflection of Max Oberrauch after a shot by Danny Elliscasis from the faceoff. The home team, before the end of time, became dangerous with Brandon Mc Nally but Colin Furlong was careful. In the second period the visitors missed a solitary counterattack. The Sterzing, right in the middle of the game, equalized in powerplay with Jure Sotlar who transformed in goal a good pass by Christian Borgatello. But the joy of the Broncos didn’t last long because Max Oberrauch realized the new advantage of the Wolves with a shot from the faceoff and deflected by a home defender. Formerly Corbett hit the pole. In the third period the Bruneck defended the minimum advantage and then tried to find the goal of safety. This situation arrived only in the final seconds with Armin Hofer at the empty net for 3:1 for the Wolves. Pustertal returned to the victory. Now the Wolves had 13 points ahead of Lustenau in the standings.

EK Die Zeller Eisbären - Red Bull Hockey Juniors 2:3 OT (0:1, 2:0, 0:1. 0:1)

It was the third Salzburg-Derby this season. The Red Bull Hockey Juniors put a lot of pressure towards the Eisbären right from the beginning. After unsuccessful powerplay of the Juniors, it was Maximilian Rebernig who captured the lead for the visitors in full strength. Dominik Frank had some good saves during a 5 vs. 3 Powerplay of Salzburg. After that Zell hat chances in double powerplay but couldn’t score either. Only 45 seconds of the second period were played, when Fabio Scholz succeeded with the equalizer. Scholz hadn’t enough and scored a second time only 80 seconds later. Salzburg increased pressure again but couldn’t score anymore in the second. Defender Valtteri Meisaari tied the game in the 48th minute. Nico Wieser shined with some spectacular saves in the Crunch-Time. But also the Juniors had further good chances. The decision had to be found in the Overtime. The 17-year old Filip Varejcka took care of it on decided the game for Salzburg.

Big Derby between the second placed EHC Lustenau and the third placed VEU Feldkirch. The visitors started with a lot of pressure into the game and created many chances. After two and a half minutes Christian Jennes opened the scoring assisted by Robin Soudek. Feldkirch had full control over the game and Stefan Wiedmaier doubled the lead. Soudek acted as assistance again. Feldkirch still hadn’t enough and Steven Birnstill brought the 3:0 – again Soudek made the assist. Lustenau also created a couple of chances but didn’t manage to score in the first. This changed in the second, when Philip Putnik narrowed the gap in the 30th minute. Martin Grabher Meier made it an open game again, scoring the 2:3 in the 30th minute in powerplay. Feldkirch still had plenty of chances, but couldn’t convert in the second. It was an open game in the third period. The goalies on both ends did a good job and didn’t let further pucks through. Feldkirch won the Derby with 3:2 and narrowed the gap to the second place.

The Ritten recovered Andreas Lutz for this match but had to give up on Alex Frei and Latvian defender Aleksandrs Jerofejevs who injured himself in the last game in Groden. The Fassa was without Soel Costantin and Luca Zandonella. The home team built a lot in the first half as they went definitely to the sides of Gianni Scola. Markus Spinell opened the scoring for the Rittner Buam after 9 minutes. Then the home team doubled with Ivan Tauferer in the first powerplay available to the Ritten. In the second period the game was definitely more balanced. Karl Ostman brought the Falcons back into the game, right in the middle, on a penalty shot. But the home team regained the control before the end of the second half with the goal of Thomas Spinell. During the period the protagonist was Ivan Tauferer in powerplay after a double minor by Diego Iori: the defender realized in two minutes (47 ') two goals for his personal hatrick. The Ritten won by 5:1.

Asiago played at home without three forwards: Josè Magnabosco, Davide Conci and Simone Olivero. The home team had a better start in the game but they didn’t realize. Then the match became nervous and it started to be called some penalties. The Gherdeina scored after nine minutes in powerplay with Samuel Moroder who deflected a puck under the net. In the final time Asiago was more enterprising but the Gherdeina ended the first half ahead for a goal. The beginning of the second period was always conditioned by penalties. The Gherdeina doubled in 2-man advantage with David Roupec. But even the Asiago's answer was in double superiority: Alex Gellert made a great shot at the intersection right in the middle of the game. Then the home formation pushed a lot as they found the draw with a precise shot by Michele Marchetti. In the third time the absolute protagonist was Misa Pietila: the goalkeeper of Gherdeina saved the result several times. Even at overtime the result was not unlocked. Anthony Bardaro was decisive on shutout for the victory of Asiago (3:2).
