“I’ve worked with a mental coach before – and it did me a lot of good,” says Haudum. “It was during a phase when things weren’t going so well on the ice. I can really recommend it to anyone – player or not – because it helps you understand yourself better.”

The Linz native speaks openly about the challenges of an environment shaped by performance, competition, and strong personalities. “Ice hockey is a very masculine, dominant setting where the stronger often prevails. I think sometimes a bit more sensitivity would do everyone good – especially in how we treat each other.”

Haudum has also seen how important respect and understanding are, particularly in youth hockey. “Everyone is different. If you notice that someone isn’t doing well, it can make a big difference to simply ask how they are.”

With his open and thoughtful attitude, Lukas Haudum shows that mental strength is about more than endurance. It’s also about showing compassion – and allowing others to be themselves.
