Daniel Gellon (#13) of HC Meran/o Pircher, time 30:00, made contact with an opponent deemed as illegal check to the head or neck, IIHF Rule 48. Based on the video evidence, it is determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 2 – ‘Reckless’ – a deliberate and/or dangerous action with no concern for the result, with a conscious action to provoke, through intent and a willful purpose.

Thursday night, in Meran, Meran forward #13 Daniel Gellon was involved in an incident deemed as an illegal check to the head or neck on Lustenau d'man #41 Mads Larsen, resulting in no apparent or reported injury.

As the video shows, Lustenau player #41, Mads Larsen gains possession of the puck in his offensive zone and is skating to the high slot area, where he is playing a pass to his teammate. Short after releasing the puck Larsen gets hit by Daniel Gellon, with the head area being the main point of contact.

This is an illegal check to the head or neck.

Gellon was playing the puck high, trying to get it out of his d'zone. After recognizing that Larsen is intercepting his attempt to clear the puck out of his d'zone, Gellon started to skate hard into the direction of Larsen in the high slot area. In this area it is conceivable that a body check can and will occur. However, either a regard to play the puck or making a legal body check is required. In the incident, Gellon prepares to make a check by elevating through the hit, extending his elbow out making the head of Larsen the main point of contact. If Gellon wants to make a body check in this situation he has to ensure that no head contact will occur.

Effective immediately, Daniel Gellon (#13) of HC Meran/o Pircher is suspended for 2 games.

To summarize:

  • This is an illegal check to the head or neck
  • Head is main point of contact
  • Not a repeat offender
