Dennis Robertson (#22) of EC Red Bull Salzburg, time 11:09 was involved in an incident deemed as Fighting (IIHF Rule 46). The video evidence was sent to the win2day ICE Hockey League PSC, which determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 2 - 'Reckless'.

Sunday night December 08, in Feldkirch, Salzburg D'man #22 Dennis Robertson was assessed a 5-minute major penalty and a game-misconduct under IIHF Rule 46.5 - Dangerous Puncher - 'Sucker Puncher' of an altercation with Vorarlberg D'Man #2 Jakob Friend.

As the video shows, as Robertson crosses the attacking blue line, Friend delivers a check on Robertson, knocking Friend to the ice. With Robertson on top, left hand in the back area of Friend where Friend appears to be pinned to the ice, Robertson throws a series of punches directed at the head of Friend, who is an unwilling combatant.

This is a violation of IIHF Rule 46.4 which in part, is defined as: The “Aggressor” in an altercation shall be the Player who continues to throw punches in an attempt to inflict punishment on their opponent who is in a defenseless position or who is an “unwilling combatant”.

It is important to note, at no time in the sequence does Friend show any interest in engaging with Robertson in this manner. The DOPs acknowledges that this maybe considered retribution from the hit or hits in a prior game, while the PSC decision is solely based on the isolated incident. Regardless, players are not excused from violating the rules in retribution or retaliation for hits thrown, legal or illegal in nature. The ICE Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Dennis Robertson for 2 games and fined 500.00 euros.

To summarize:

  • This is deemed as an Aggressor of an altercation
  • Opponent is defenseless
  • Not a repeat offender
