Ethan Szypula (#94) of Rittner Buam SkyAlps, time 29:38, made contact with an opponent deemed as Cross-Checking, IIHF Rule 59. Based on the video evidence, it is determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 1 – ‘Careless’ – insufficient attention or thought to avoid harm or error.

Liable to happen as a consequence of, by intending to affect an opponent through a reactionary or accidental motion or the incident is deemed careless causing negligence. Thursday night, March 28th, in Ritten, Ritten Forward #94 Ethan Szypula was involved in an incident on Sterzing D'Man #17 Fabian Hackhofer deemed as cross-checking.

As the video shows, with both Szypula and Hackhofer in a race for a loose puck, Szypula first engages in a body to body battle to gain ice and in an effort to gain puck possession. As the 2 players continue jocking for body position, the sticks are raised. As the battle entered the area of the boards, Szypula with his stick in a high position, followed through in a cross checking motion at a high height, propelling Hackhofer into the boards in a unprotected manner.

This is cross-checking.

It is important to note, the use of the stick to either impede or deliver force to an opponent is the responsibility of the person delivering the infraction. In this case and specifically, Szypula, with the stick up followed through with an overly aggressive cross check motion, propelling the opponent into the boards with force. The reason for supplementary discipline is Szypula continued in a follow through motion, by extending his stick horizontally, at a height in line with the opponents’ shoulders and close to the head and neck area. The force of the cross check is deemed overly aggressive and deemed more than a battle play or in a effort to protect himself.

Effective immediately, the Alps Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Ethan Szypula for 2 games. 1 game for the current cross-check and 1 additional game as a repeat
offender.

To summarize:

  • This is cross checking
  • Location of cross check
  • Repeat offender
