Lukas Bär (#89) of HC TIWAG Innsbruck - Die Haie, time 36:03 was involved in an incident deemed as Slashing (IIHF Rule 61). The video evidence was sent to the win2day ICE Hockey League PSC, which determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 1 - 'Careless'.

On Wednesday in Innsbruck, Innsbruck forward #89 Lukas Bär was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for slashing Pioneers forward #46 Oskar Maier.

As the video shows, an odd-man rush develops through the neutral zone, resulting in a scoring opportunity. Maier drives toward the net in anticipation of a possible pass or rebound. Following closely on the play, Bär raises his stick above his head and delivers a forceful, downward chop to the arm area of Maier.

This is slashing.

While it is common in these situations for a defending player to use his stick to impede an opponent—sometimes involving a minor slashing motion—what elevates this play to supplementary discipline is the type, force, and location of the contact. Bär delivers a full wind-up with his stick raised overhead, bringing it down with significant force and with the toe of the blade turned over, directly striking Maier’s arm. This action goes beyond a typical stick check or battle for position. The violent downward motion and targeting of the opponent’s hand and arm area present a high risk of injury and are not considered acceptable.

The ICE Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Lukas Bär (#89) of HC TIWAG Innsbruck – Die Haie for two (2) games and issued a fine of €400.00.
The suspension consists of:

  • One (1) game for the current incident.
  • One (1) additional game as a result of being classified as a repeat offender.

To summarize:

  • This is a slash
  • Forceful
  • Repeat offender
