Luca Erne (#22) of Pioneers Vorarlberg, time 23:41 was involved in an incident deemed as Elbowing (IIHF Rule 45). The video evidence was sent to the win2day ICE Hockey League PSC, which determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 1 - 'careless'.

Tuesday night, January 27th, in Ljubljana, Vorarlberg forward #22 Luca Erne delivered a high, elevated and forceful hit, deemed as elbowing on Ljubljana center-man #10 Miha Bericic resulting in a 5-minute major penalty plus game-misconduct being assessed.

As the video shows, with Erne approaching from mid-ice, Bericic collects the puck and chips it back to his defenseman. As the play develops, Erne removes his right hand from his stick and uses the extended arm to deliver an upwards blow that makes forceful contact with Bericic’s head, resulting in an apparent injury. This is Elbowing. It is important to note, this is not a case where initial contact is made through the opponent’s Body and subsequently rides up to the head. Instead, Erne clearly extends his arm and delivers a direct blow to Bericic’s head. The head is the main point of contact, and the contact is made with unnecessary force. This hit is avoidable, and Erne has sufficient time to minimize, deliver contact to the core or avoid contact altogether. Accordingly, this play meets the standard for supplementary discipline.

The ICE Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Luca Erne (#22) for 2 games and fined 400.00 euros.

To summarize:

  • This is elbowing

  • Not a repeat offender
