The Vienna Capitals have announced the departure of Head Coach Gerry Fleming. The 59-year-old Canadian had been behind the Capitals’ bench since the start of the 2024/25 season. Fleming was appointed Head Coach of the Vienna Capitals prior to the 2024/25 campaign. Under the former NHL forward’s guidance, the Capitals reached the pre-playoffs last season after finishing tenth in the regular season standings, where they were eliminated by Hydro Fehérvár AV19.

Fabian Scholz has been part of the Vienna Capitals’ professional coaching staff since the 2023/24 season. The former top-flight defenseman gained coaching experience in the Caps’ youth system before being promoted to the senior team’s staff under Christian Dolezal. The 35-year-old Salzburg native also worked several times with Austria’s national team, serving as an Assistant Coach under Roger Bader during preparations for the World Championship.

Christian Dolezal, Sporting Director of the Vienna Capitals, said: “At this stage of the season, we have to acknowledge that the expected progress in our play has not materialized. This decision was not made lightly, but we believe now is the right moment for a change. The remaining coaching staff knows exactly what needs to be done in the four games leading up to the international break. Our goal is to complete the ongoing search for a new head coach by then. We would like to thank Gerry Fleming for his commitment and contribution to the Vienna Capitals and wish him all the best for the future.”
