Vienna Capitals remain unbeaten in the pick round

After a dramatic 4:3 road win against Moser Medical Graz99ers the spusu Vienna Capitals remain unbeaten and extended the lead at the top of the table int the pick round. While the EC-KAC got a home win for upgrading third spot, the EC Red Bull Salzburg got its first victory after regular time in the pick round at the debut of head coach Andreas Brucker. In the qualification round the HC Orli Znojmo celebrated a huge comeback overtime win at Linz after trailing 0:3 in the first and the Dornbirn Bulldogs stayed alive in the fight for playoffs.

The Caps extended the lead at the top of the table with a dramatic 4:3 road win in Graz. Halfway through the first the hosts used their second power play with Ty Loney finding the back of the net. Graz had the momentum and Matt Garbowsky added a second just 41 second later. The remainder of the opening period was all Graz but no more goals were scored. The game was at eye level in the middle frame until 99ers captain Oliver Setzinger received a major penalty for a one man fight and Peter Schneider got Vienna on the scoreboard during the power play. Early in the third Curtis Hamilton restored the two-goal lead but the guests came back again with a goal from Chris DeSousa (49'). It even became better for Vienna with Sondre Olden and DeSousa turning the game around with two PP goals. Graz tried everything in a final push but the Caps earned their seventh successive win.

With a 5:2 home win against HCB Südtirol Alperia the EC-KAC upgraded its third spot in standings and got the first victory after three consecutive losses. After a non-goal opening frame Adam Comrie got his colors on the scoreboard for the first time in the 26th minute. Soon later, Marco Insam tied it for the guests with a blueliner. The champion became more aggressive in the final minutes of the second, but the hosts scored by Marco Richter. After Clemens Unterwege increased the lead for EC-KAC in the third, the South Tyrolean pulled one back on powerplay immediately. In the last three minutes the home team got on the scoreboard again with Johannes Bischofberger and an empty-netter of Andrew Kozek.

At the debut of Andreas Brucker, who got promoted to head coach on Tuesday, the EC Red Bull Salzburg booked a tight 3:2 road win against Fehervar AV19. The Austrian side secured its first victory after regular time in the pick round and got the first win after four consecutive losses on the road. Salzburg got off the better start and took the lead after William O’Neill realized a rebound. In the middle frame the home team increased their pressure on the offensive end and managed to tie the game about halfway through the second thanks to a blue-liner of Harri Tikkanen. After both teams wasted some chances the hosts turned the game around less than two minutes to go in the second. The Hungarians let the lead slip very fast away in the third period when Matthias Trattnig tied the game on powerplay. The home team now pushed hard for their third, but Salzburg scored. After Brant Harris hit the crossbar, Florian Baltram retake the lead for the Austrian side. The home team later had a big chance to tie the game after Cijan’s penalty but the hosts were too ineffective. Also after pulling their goalie Fehervar was not able to tie the game again.

After trailing by three in the first, the HC Orli Znojmo celebrated a huge 4:3 overtime win against EHC LIWEST Black Wings Linz and made a decisive step forward towards the playoffs. It was all Linz in the first having a 3:0 lead after 20 minutes. However, the “eagles” struck back with Stretch pulling one in the second and Marzek halving the deficit early in the last. Vainonen forced the overtime in which Allan McPherson secured the extra point for the Czech side.

With a 2:1 home win against EC Panaceo VSV the Dornbirn Bulldogs narrowed the gap to second place in the qualification round and kept their chance for participating in the playoffs alive. After Dan Bakala had some great saves in the first, Dornbirn benefited on the first powerplay occasion. Brodie Reid realized a rebound about five minutes to go in the first. While the hosts were not able to double up in the second, Villach’s Jamie Fraser tied the game seconds before the last intermission. Speed, intensity and emotions grew in the final frame and Scott Timmins decided the game for the hosts with a backhander.
