Cliff Pu was considered a hot stock for an NHL ticket in his junior hockey days. He scored 210 points (80 goals, 130 assists) in 232 games for the Oshawa Generals, London Knights and the Kingston Frontenacs. After leading the London Knights to the OHL championship and OHL Memorial Cup win in 2016, the Canadian played even better in 2016/2017. Pu recorded 86 points (35 goals, 51 assists) in 63 games, lifting himself to 8th in the OHL's top scorer standings and he was also named to the OHL's Third All-Star Team.

Drafted by Buffalo in 2016
Pu, drafted 69th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in 2016 and signed to a three-years entry-level contract, stayed in the OHL for one more year. He then made his American Hockey League debut season for Carolina's Charlotte Checkers farm team the following season in 2018/. He went on to play in the American Hockey LEague and ECHL. Last season Pu successfully forwarded in the American Hockey League for the Cleveland Monsters. "Cliff is a physical player who is hard to separate from the glass. He has good skating qualities and is also technically skilled," said Head Coach Dave Barr, describing the new signing.
