Salzburg got off to a dream start in a top-class game. After just 81 seconds, Scott Kosmachuk put the Red Bulls ahead against his former club on the power play. It was the third goal of the season for the 30-year-old forward, who played in Villach from 2020 to 2022, and it was his only one of the evening. The visitors even made it 2:0 in the thirteenth minute through Nash Nienhuis, the defender's first league goal in a Salzburg shirt. VSV were unimpressed by the two-goal deficit, however, and reduced the deficit to 1:2 just 25 seconds later through Maximilian Rebernig. It was the thirteenth goal of the season for the second-best scorer in the win2day ICE Hockey League, and the 14th was to follow in the third period. But the seventh-placed team in the table equalized less than three minutes later. Guus van Nees scored in overtime after a great pass from Benjamin Lanzinger. The “Eagles” then even pressed for the opening goal. However, the teams went into the first period break tied at 2:2. In the second period, the 3.285 fans in the Villach Stadthalle saw a much quieter game. Big chances were few and far between, but things got back to business in the third period.

Maximilian Rebernig gave VSV the lead for the first time just one and a half minutes after the restart. It was the forward's second brace of the season, but Salzburg produced the perfect response just ten seconds later and it was Scott Kosmachuk who scored for the second time against his former club. It did not stay 3:3 for long, however, as VSV played an outstanding game and took the lead again just two minutes later through Alex Wall. A further two-and-a-half minutes later, Felix Maxa gave the “Eagles” a two-goal lead for the first time that evening. 47 minutes had been played at this point. Salzburg then tried everything once more, but were unable to score again and Nikita Scherbak netted an empty-netter with 23 seconds remaining to finally decide the game. It was Villach's second victory over Salzburg in their second game of the season and their fifth win in a row. They are now only two points behind sixth-placed local rivals EC-KAC in the table. Salzburg, who are fourth in the table, conceded one of only two defeats from their last twelve games in all competitions.
