1.137 spectators came to the Intercable Arena for HC Pustertal's first preseason home game, which was the first appearance of the season for the visitors from Villach. The home side got off to a lightning start and took the lead in the very first minute: there was a lot of traffic in front of Villach goalkeeper JP Lamoureux and a shot from the blue line by Ole Andersen found its way into the net. However, the Carinthians got better and better over the course of the first period and turned the game around with three goals from counter-attack situations. New signing Guus van Nes with a brace and Benjamin Lanzinger were ice-cold in front of Pustertal goalkeeper Olivier Roy.

The picture was completely different in the middle period. Bruneck dominated proceedings and did not allow any counter-attacks this time. The result was three goals by Mantinger, Petan and Lacroix - giving the "Wolves" a 4:3 lead. The teams neutralised each other in the third period and chances were few . The visitors did manage to equalise in a final push. After Lamoureux went off the ice, Pustertal was penalised for delaying the game and MacPherson used the power play to make it 4:4. It went to the shootout, where van Nes became the match winner with another goal.
