Andrew Desjardins (#84) of EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV, time 21:11 was involved in an incident deemed as Slew-Footing (IIHF Rule 52). The video evidence was sent to the win2day ICE Hockey League PSC, which determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 1 - 'Careless'.

Thursday night in Bozen, Villach forward #84 Andrew Desjardins was involved in an incident on Bozen D'Man #90 Dylan Di Perna deemed as Slew-Footing. Resulting in a 5-minute major penalty plus game-misconduct being assessed by the on-ice officials.

As the video shows, as Di Perna curls back in his D'Zone to skate behind the net to make an outlet pass. Reading the play Desjardins drops down, curls around the net and delivers a hit on Di Perna. At the time, Di Perna is eligible to be checked. However, the check delivered involved the use of the upper body in 1 direction and rotation and the leg up and in to leverage in taking Di Perna down. This action caused Di Perna to fall dangerously to the ice.

This is slew-footing.

It is important both criteria of a slew foot were satisfied in that both the upper body in 1 direction and the leg as a pivot point. What causes this play to rise to the level of supplementary discipline is Desjardins use of both his upper and lower body to take Di Perna to the ice in a dangerous fashion. The force of the check was distributed through the left arm, creating a full 180* rotation in 1 direction while lifting his right leg up and in to use as a pivot point. To make this hit legal, maintaining the angle off approach, distributing force through the shoulder to opponents body and not a need to be overly aggressive on a routine play.

The ICE Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Andrew Desjardins for 1 game for the Slew-Footing infraction and an additional 1 game as a repeat offender and fined 400.00 euros.

To summarize:

  • This is slew-footing
  • Dangerous action
  • Repeat offender
