HDD SIJ Acroni Jesenice inflicted the first defeat after regulation on EK Die Zeller Eisbären. Despite trailing early, the defending champions won clearly 4-1 and are now only two points behind the Alps Hockey League leaders.
With the Rittner Buam SkyAlps, S.G. Cortina Hafro and the Hockey Unterland Cavaliers, three other teams from the top-6 also picked up wins, while Red Bull Hockey Juniors (eight) and HK RST Pellet Celje (three) each extended their point streaks. EHC Lustenau won a high-scoring Vorarlberg derby: eight goals, four of each team, were scored in the opening frame, while Steel Wings Linz AG also won their fourth home game against HC Meran/o.
The EK Die Zeller Eisbären suffered its first defeat after regulation on Saturday. In the twelve games before that, the Salzburg side celebrated eleven victories, only once (5-6 after shootout against Fassa) took a defeat. In the duel with their first chaser HDD SIJ Acroni Jesenice, the league leaders lost 1-4. The Slovenians, which had more of the game in front of almost 1000 spectators, quickly equalized a lead of the home team and decided the game with two goals in the middle period. The Austrian goal was scored by Christian Jennes, while the impressive goal-scoring streak of Alps Hockey League top scorer Tomi Wilenius ended after eight games.
Unterland again defeats higher ranked team
The Hockey Unterland Cavaliers followed HDD SIJ Acroni Jesenice (5-2) by inflicting defeat on another team from the top-3 with a 4-3 overtime win over the Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan on Saturday: In front of their home crowd, the sixth-placed team twice made up a deficit to finally seal the deal in overtime, as Giovanni Pertile (62.) scored in the "extra session" on powerplay.
The Steel Wings Linz also recorded a success after overtime, with the 4-3 over HC Meran/o Pircher their third victory in the last four games and thus remain unbeaten at home against the South Tyroleans. Patrick Söllinger scored a brace for the Upper Austrians, Mikael Saha (64.) hit the OT game-winning goal.
Ritten and Cortina put pressure on Broncos
The Ritten Buam SkyAlps and S.G. Cortina Hafro have increased the pressure on the third-placed team from Sterzing: Ritten won 4:1 at SHC Fassa Falcons - the line of Simon Kostner, Ethan Szypula and Kevin Fink provided the three decisive goals in the middle frame.
Fifth remains S.G. Cortina Hafro: At home, the Italians won against EC Die Adler Stadtwerke Kitzbühel with 10-0 and cruised past to their sixth victory in a row. Four goals were scored by last year's finalists in the first period, in the second – and finally overall too – Cortina scored on all its powerplays. The Tyrolean team conceded its sixth road defeat in a row and remained scoreless for the first time this year. Cortina goalkeeper Hayden Hawkey stopped all 18 shots on goal. Nine different players scored for Cortina.
Salzburg and Celje extend point-streak
Red Bull Hockey Juniors and HK RST Pellet Celje each extended their point streaks: the farm team of the win2day ICE Hockey League champions defeated HC Gherdeina valgardena.it 4-2 at home to score for the eighth time in a row. After 30 minutes, the Salzburg side was 3-0 ahead, and even two power play goals from the bottom of the table did not shake Teemu Levijoki's young team.
The league newcomer from Slovenia claimed points for the third time in a row, securing a 5-3 win at EC-KAC Future Team and winning for the first time in the Alps Hockey League on the road. The visitors were 2-0 up after just three and a half minutes, led 4-1 after 24 minutes and were unchallenged until the end. HKC-Forward Mikus Mintautiskis showed up with three points (2G|1A). For Klagenfurt it was the sixth defeat in a row.
Lustenau cheers derby win
EHC Lustenau won the first derby against EC Bregenzerwald with 6-4. However, the 1153 fans in the Rheinhalle got their money's worth already in the opening frame, seeing eight goals in the first 20 minutes, four each team. The guests were mostly ahead, only in the last five minutes the "Stickers" could equalize the two-goal deficit that had already existed early on. As the game progressed, EHC goalie Felix Nußbacher did not allow another goal and David König (32./PP1) and Hans Öhrvall (59.) decided it.
