At just 19 years old, Adrian Gesson will lead the Red Bull Hockey Juniors as captain into the new Alps Hockey League season. In the past week, the Vorarlberg native has already made two appearances for EC Red Bull Salzburg in the win2day ICE Hockey League, scoring one goal. Looking ahead to the upcoming AHL season, the forward is aiming to improve on last year’s campaign and emphasizes the importance of getting the chance to compete against experienced players at such a young age.

Looking back, how satisfied are you with last season – both personally and as a team?
Adrian Gesson: “Personally, I think I did a good job over the year. I kept improving every time I played, though I still have a lot to work on. Team-wise, it was disappointing because we didn’t even make the playoffs. Now we need to get back on track and fight to qualify.”

How has the Alps Hockey League shaped Austrian hockey, especially when it comes to developing young players?
Adrian Gesson: “It’s really important, because it’s the first time you compete against men, some of whom have played in higher leagues. The level is much tougher than playing against guys your own age, and that’s a huge step in our development.”

What expectations do you have going into the anniversary season?
Adrian Gesson: “I just want to keep improving every day. I want to get better, help my team, and support our young guys. We still have a lot to work on, but I’m eager to learn and to grow together with the team.”

Which matchups are you particularly looking forward to?
Adrian Gesson: “Of course, the derby against Zell am See – it’s always special to play there and it’s a great rivalry. I also enjoy facing Bregenzerwald, my hometown club. And then all the Italian teams – those games are always great matchups and a lot of fun.”

Who will be the anniversary champion, and which underdog might surprise?
Adrian Gesson: “That’s a tough one. Zell am See looks really strong again this year. They’ve brought in a lot of new players and, since they won last season, I think they’ll be one of the top contenders again. But I also believe we can be a surprise team. We’re young, hungry, and ready to fight, and I’m confident we can have a great season.”

Facing Sisak in the opener, what will be key for a strong start to the anniversary season?
Adrian Gesson: “We just need to play our game. We can’t afford to be nervous or scared. If we stick to our forecheck, play with confidence, and use our speed, we have a great chance to win.”

All games of the new Alps Hockey League season will be streamed live on www.valcome.tv. To watch all the games of your team during the Regular Season and the Master/Qualification Round, there is a special Team Pass available for only €99.
