On Sunday, August 17, 2025, Werner Alfare was on a bicycle ride when he suddenly collapsed. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, he fell into a coma from which he never regained consciousness. On Thursday, September 4, 2025, Werner Alfare passed away at the age of 75 at Dornbirn Hospital, surrounded by his closest family members.

Since 1976, Werner Alfare had been closely connected with EHC Lustenau in various functions. Besides his family, he dedicated most of his life to the club. His duties ranged from press officer, team manager, and sporting director to serving as club president from 2001 until 2011.

Werner also contributed his experience and knowledge at the association level, serving the Vorarlberg Ice Hockey Association (VHV) for many years as vice president, secretary, and sport coordinator. He was also significantly involved in the founding of the Alps Hockey League.

Even after his retirement, Werner remained committed to ice hockey, especially to EHC Lustenau, where he served as “finance chief.” With advice and active support, he assisted the board with his great expertise, experience, and tireless dedication. Werner shaped ice hockey in Vorarlberg and EHC Lustenau over nearly five decades like few others.

“The news of his sudden passing has deeply shaken our club. With Werner, we have lost not only a valued friend but also an exceptional person whose absence will be impossible to fill. EHC Lustenau will always keep him in loving and grateful memory. Our deepest sympathy goes to his family. May you find comfort and strength in this difficult time,” said EHC Lustenau president Herbert Oberscheider on behalf of the board and the entire EHC family.

The entire hockey community of the Alps Hockey League sends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Werner Alfare.
