After five years in the win2day ICE Hockey League, during which goaltender Andreas Bernard played a total of 109 games for Villach, Bolzano, and most recently Val Pusteria, the 35-year-old has decided to join Alps Hockey League side HC Merano/o Pircher. In an interview, the experienced goalie talks about the reasons behind his move and his expectations for the new challenge.

“I was looking for a team where I could play a lot and enjoy playing this wonderful sport again,” explains Bernard. The decision to move to Merano was an easy one for him: “I think I've found a great organization in Merano - with a local coach who is highly motivated to take the club forward.”

Even though the 35-year-old has been active in a higher league to date, Bernard has never lost sight of the Alps Hockey League. “I've always followed the Alps in recent years because many former teammates play there and I was interested in the development of some of the young players,” he reports.

Bernard, who has made a total of five World Cup Top Division appearances for Italy, has clear goals for his new club: “We want to reach the playoffs with Merano and establish ourselves in the league.” He wants to take on a leadership role not only in sporting terms, but also as a person: “I've always taken on the role of father in the team in recent years, giving the youngsters tips and helping them to get through the highs and lows,” concludes the veteran.
