Black Wings Continue Making History

Short text 809 CharactersPlain text

The Steinbach Black Wings Linz have taken the win2day ICE Hockey League's playoff motto—"Time for History"—literally, chasing one record after another. After already making league history alongside the Moser Medical Graz99ers by playing both the highest-scoring playoff game in the league’s 25-year history and setting a world record for the most consecutive playoff overtimes, the Upper Austrians have added another historic milestone in their opening semifinal battle against EC-KAC.

In an electrifying semifinal opener in Klagenfurt, the decisive goal was scored after 103 minutes and 46 seconds of play. This marathon matchup was not only the fifth-longest game in the league’s 25-year history but also set a completely new record: the longest "3 vs. 3 overtime" ever played in ICE Hockey League history.

In total, both teams fought fiercely for 23 minutes and 46 seconds during this spectacular "3 vs. 3" format, a style typically known for rapid decisions. The previous record for a "3 vs. 3" overtime was 7 minutes and 3 seconds—also established by the Black Wings and the Graz99ers in their quarterfinal clash exactly two weeks earlier. Well behind, in third place, stands the 2022 Finals opener between Salzburg and Fehérvár, lasting 4 minutes and 56 seconds.

When comparing yesterday's record-setting match with all overtime games in win2day ICE Hockey League history, the clash between EC-KAC and Steinbach Black Wings Linz ranks as the fifth-longest game ever played. The absolute record remains intact from March 15, 2019, when Johannes Bischofberger secured victory for EC-KAC against HCB Südtirol Alperia after an incredible 120 minutes and 51 seconds.

However, one thing is clear: The playoffs are far from over, and the Black Wings still have their sights set on breaking even more records. For Linz, it's still very much "Time for History."
