After the dramatic win in the third overtime, Bolzano came to the Eisarena Salzburg with new confidence. But the home side stayed true to their style of play and showed pressure with an aggressive forecheck. The Red Bulls were also awarded an early powerplay but could not capitalize on it, like the South Tyroleans, which had a powerplay available too – but without becoming really dangerous. After another goalless Salzburg powerplay, Bolzano speed up, with big chances by Gazley and Valentine. In the 16th minute, Mike Halmo capitalized on a turnover and scored into the far corner for the visitors' lead. Just 44 seconds later, Gazley doubled up, as he escaped down the right side and his shot slipped through Tolvanen.

The hosts came into the second offensively oriented, Bolzano tried to find odd men rushes. The guests took advantage of the momentum and scored the next goal in the 24th minute. First Tolvanen saved twice against Halmo, but the puck jumped to Gazley and he laced his brace. Not even two minutes later, the Red Bulls scored. After a nice combination Mario Huber lit the lamp (26.). Subsequently, the teams had an open exchange with chances on both sides. After a period of pressure from Salzburg, the HCB turned jubilant on the opposite side. After an ideal Valentin assist, captain Daniel Frank only had to hold out the stick for the renewed three-goal lead. But this time it took only 64 seconds for the Red Bulls to strike back and again it was Salzburg's playoff top scorer Huber who scored top shelf. The score was 2-4 going into the second intermission.

After the break, Salzburg was again more present offensively, put on a lot of pressure and in the 47th minute, Peter Schneider halved the deficit. The tempo remained high, the duels were intense. There were chances on both sides: First Angelo Miceli got the opportunity after Salzburg turnover, a little later Nissner fired off in the high slot and with a lot of confusion in the HCB defense. However, Harvey was on the spot with a brilliant save. Salzburg continued to make the game, but the "Foxes" remained defensively strong. Towards the end Salzburg pulled goalie Tolvanen without any main impact.
