Both teams did not run at risk early in the game with Bolzano playing solid defensively as in their last few games. After three minutes Smith missed the first chance for the foxes when his shot just went wide. After Salzburg having no shots on their opening power play, the guests did not do better with a man advantage - Red Bulls defender had the best chances but was stopped on a breakaway. After a goalless first, it took twelve more minutes but then all goals of the day were scored within 94 seconds. With Hughes being in the penalty box, Miceli opened the scoring with a hard shot. Just 40 seconds later Herburger took another penalty and Smith doubled the lead with an onetimer. This time joy was short-lived as Salzburg pulled one back. Herburger finished a three on one situation to put his side on the scoreboard. In the third the Red Bulls pressed hard for an equalizer but they were always stopped by HCB netminder Tuokkola. With 27 seconds to go the hosts pulled goalie Starkbaum for another skater but it was not enough this day. As four years ago, Bolzano won the finals opener. The "best of seven" series continues at Volksgarten tomorrow.
