After playing for several youth teams in Canada and four years with the University of Prince Edward Island, Maione made his ECHL debut in the 2013/14 season in a Fort Wayne Komets jersey, also winning the Universiade with Team Canada in Canazei that same year. He split the next two years between the Brampton Beast and the Wheeling Nailers, showing off all his skills: in total, he scored a strong 127 points (31 goals and 96 assist) in 187 East Coast Hockey League appearances. In 2016 he moved to Slovakia to HC Banska Bystrica: here he won the championship, contributing 66 points (13+53) in 64 games - and the title of the highest-scoring defenceman. His next stop was the Finnish Liiga: in the jersey of KalPa he collected another 52 points from 72 games (18 goals and 34 assist) between the championship and the Champions Hockey League. In this case, too, he was the league's highest-scoring defender, was selected for the All Star Team and also won the title of Most Entertaining Player.

In 2018/19 he then moved to the KHL: in the jersey of Dinamo Riga he scored 46 points (11+35) in 58 appearances and was also selected to the league's All Star Team there. The following year he moved within the league to China to the Kunlun Red Star. In the same year he won the Spengler Cup with Canada (7 games, 2 points), after which he bounced between Dinamo Minsk and Dinamo Riga again. He also started the 2020/21 season in the Latvian capital (4 goals and 1 assist in 41 matches) and finished the season with Red Bull Munich. In the DEL, Maione gained 9 points from 17 games (4 goals and 5 assists). The newcomer will arrive in Bolzano tomorrow and will be available to coach Doug Mason as of Wednesday.
