EC Red Bull Salzburg had an early four minute Power Play, but the hosts could not take advantage. On the other side, HCB Südtirol Alperia played very effective: Dominic Monardo (14.) and Chris DeSousa (15.) put Bozen ahead with two goals within 59 seconds: Each forward had an easy job scoring free infront of the net. This was a wake-up-call for the Austrians. The Mozart City responded applying pressure on their opponent, but Duncan and Co. couldn‘t break through Bozens defense. The Red Bulls controlled the game in period 2, but the Foxes scored: Luca Frigo potted the 3:0 after a counter attack (26.). The puck was deflected by Stajnoch into the own net. The Red Bulls were shocked. Goalie Bernhard Starkbaum did not allow a fourth goal by DeSousa and Sointu. The Mozart Citizens made much pressure in the last 20 minutes. Finally, the Red Bulls were rewarded with their first goal of the game in minute 55: Layne Viveiros netted from the slot – 1:3. Duncan and Co. continued applying pressure on Bozens defense. The Austrians stroke again 87 seconds before the end: Peter Mueller was successful with a shot from the distance. Salzburg tried everything to tie the game in the final seconds, but the Foxes defended their lead and earned their second Erste Bank Eishockey League title.
Bozen has written history earning the title: The Italians are the first team winning the Championship ranked on place eight after the regular season.
