Capitals strengthen defense with Evan Wardley

The spusu Vienna Capitals have signed defenseman Evan Wardley. The defensive specialist has been in Vienna for over a week and was able to recommend himself for a contract. The 1.91 meter tall and 99 kilogram Canadian is expected to make his debut in today's home game against Migross Supermercati Asiago Hockey. The 29-year-old most recently played for the Slovakian first division team HK 32 Liptovsky Mikulas.

Born in Calgary, Alberta, Evan Wardley played at the highest junior level for the Seattle Thunderbirds in the Western Hockey League for almost five seasons. In the 2014-15 season, the Canadian joined the Thunderbirds with Vienna-born Florian Baltram. After a stint in the ECHL with the Wheeling Nailers, Wardley moved on to the University of Lethbridge. In the 2019/20 season, the Canadian returned to the ECHL, where Wardley played for the Idaho Steelheads, the Wheeling Nailers again, the South Carolina Stingrays and the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. In the 2021-22 season, the Canadian also played in the American Hockey League with Syracuse Crunch and alongside ex-Capitals forward Jérémy Grégoire with the Texas Stars. Wardley played 129 games in the ECHL during his career. This summer, the defender ventured to Europe for the first time. Wardley played 12 games for the Slovakian first-division club HK 32 Liptovsky Mikulas before moving to Vienna.
