Release from 13.11.2025
The win2day ICE Hockey League returns on Friday with two major highlight games. In the 360th Carinthian Derby, EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV hosts EC-KAC. In addition, the league will witness its first-ever Hungarian Derby, as Hydro Fehérvár AV19 faces newcomer FTC-Telekom in a sold-out MET Aréna. Other matchups on Friday include Moser Medical Graz99ers vs. EC Red Bull Salzburg, league leader HC Pustertal Wölfe visiting the Steinbach Black Wings Linz, and HK Olimpija Ljubljana taking on HCB Südtirol Alperia. Action continues on Saturday with two more games, all streamed live on Sporteurope.tv.
For the 360th time, Villach and Klagenfurt go head-to-head in Austria’s most traditional rivalry. In a sold-out Villacher Stadthalle, VSV will look to claim its 149th win over KAC, which has won 192 meetings so far, with 19 ending in a draw. In recent years, KAC has significantly extended its lead in the all-time series: the Red Jackets have won 34 of the last 44 derbies, while Villach has not managed back-to-back victories since 2015. The season head-to-head has gone in KAC’s favor in each of the past nine seasons.
This will be their first meeting of the season. Last season, KAC won three of four encounters. While sixth-placed VSV was free from play on Wednesday, third-placed KAC celebrated a 5:3 home win over Linz – one of three victories in their last five games. Villach, meanwhile, has won two of its last five.
First-Ever Hungarian Derby
Not only the Villacher Stadthalle, but also the MET Aréna in Székesfehérvár will be sold out on Friday as Hydro Fehérvár AV19 and FTC-Telekom make league history with the first Hungarian Derby. The two sides have met several times in the Hungarian Cup – most recently in February’s final, where FTC-Telekom claimed a surprise 3:1 victory. Another tight contest is expected: both teams currently sit at 21 points, with the Budapest-based newcomers holding eighth place, just ahead of Fehérvár. Both teams were victorious on Wednesday – FTC ended a six-game losing streak by defeating Vienna, while Fehérvár edged Bolzano 3:2 in a shootout, earning their second win in the last five games.
Salzburg returns to league play after CHL defeat
Two days after a 2:6 loss to Ingolstadt in the first leg of the Champions Hockey League Round of 16, EC Red Bull Salzburg – winless in their last four games across all competitions – visits the Moser Medical Graz99ers. The Styrian side was free from play on Wednesday but went into the international break with back-to-back wins. On Thursday, Graz announced the signing of new head coach Dan Lacroix, though the Canadian will not yet be behind the bench on Friday; interim head coach Philipp Pinter will continue to lead the team until his arrival on Tuesday. This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season; last year, Salzburg won three of four games.
League leaders Pustertal visit Linz
After a 5:3 home victory against Ljubljana, HC Falkensteiner Pustertal extended its lead at the top of the standings to four points. On Friday, the Wolves visit the Steinbach Black Wings Linz, who fell 3:5 in Klagenfurt on Wednesday – their first loss after five straight wins. Pustertal, on the other hand, has dropped just two of its last twelve games. The Wolves also won the first meeting between the teams 4:1 in Bruneck. However, Linz remains undefeated at home since October 5 – a run of five games – while Pustertal boasts the league’s best away record, with only one regulation loss (a heavy 1:9 defeat in Bolzano).
Ljubljana and Bolzano seek return to winning form
In the fifth Friday matchup, HK Olimpija Ljubljana faces HCB Südtirol Alperia. Both teams enter the contest after two straight losses. Second placed Ljubljana fell to league leaders Pustertal (3:5) and Innsbruck (5:6 OT), while fourth placed Bolzano suffered shootout defeats to Fehérvár (2:3) and Graz (3:4). Bolzano took the first meeting of the season 4:2 at home. It’s a clash between the league’s best offense (Ljubljana, 83 goals) and the best defense (Bolzano, 39 goals against). For all Italian fans the match will be broadcast live and for free on DAZN Italia.
Vienna and Innsbruck wrap up Round 19 on Saturday
The sixth and final game of Round 19 will take place on Saturday, as the Vienna Capitals host HC TIWAG Innsbruck. The Sharks defeated the Pioneers 4:3 in overtime on Wednesday, while the Capitals fell 1:2 in Budapest in the debut of new head coach Kevin Constantine. For Vienna, it was their third straight loss, while Innsbruck celebrated its second consecutive win. Only three points separate the 11th-placed Capitals from the 12th-placed Sharks. Vienna won the first head-to-head meeting of the season 4:1 in Innsbruck.
Budapest and Pustertal open Round 20
Also on Saturday, FTC-Telekom will host HC Falkensteiner Pustertal in the opening game of Round 20. Both teams will be playing their second game in just 24 hours. In their first meeting on September 27 in Bruneck, the league newcomers pulled off an upset, defeating the current league leaders 3:2. The remaining five games of Round 20 will follow on Sunday.
