The Champions Hockey League season will be run using a new format with 24 participating teams. The basic structure of a regular season (formerly group stage) followed by playoffs will be retained, with two important changes:

  • Teams will play six different opponents during the regular season instead of only three (teams will play each other only once)
  • Teams will be ranked from 1 to 24 overall, instead of in groups.

The main reason for these changes is to make the competition more fair, as teams will have to prove themselves against a wider range of opponents, rather than just three teams. Once all Regular Season matches have been played, teams ranked 1-16 will advance to the playoffs, where they will be automatically assigned opponents based on their position in the standings - a playoff draw as in the past is no longer necessary.
