All four Sunday games were decided by only one goal. While Hydro Fehérvár AV19 extended their winning streak to 4, leader EC Red Bull Salzburg and second-placed spusu Vienna Capitals earned road wins. In addition, Liwest Black Wings Linz won the high-scoring game of the day.
The first period between Hydro Fehérvár AV19 and EC-KAC went on balanced, the first bigger chance was served by Andrew Yogan but Haugen saved. Both teams sped up for the second half of the period and the Hungarians got the lead eventually, Reisz put the puck in the net from close, whereas the guests hit the crossbar just at the end of the period. The game went back and forth in the second period and Fehervar doubled the lead fast, Lehtonen passed to Szita and he didn’t miss. Erdely was penalized but Klagenfurt remained ineffective on powerplay. In the middle of the period, Sarauer had to sit in the penalty box, and KAC scored, Neal was open on the right and put the puck in the net. Klagenfurt was the better team on ice at the end of the period but Fehervar defended well. The third period was way better for the guests than the first two, the Austrians left only slight chanches for Fehervar and the game went on in front of Ouzas’s net. The second half of the last 20 minutes was more balanced, Timmins was hooked on a breakaway and Koger and co. scored five on four, Timmins doubled the lead. Klagenfurt answered fast, Koch scored just after the goal. Coach Matikainen pulled his goalie for the final 2 minutes but the Hungarians’ defense was rock solid and kepts all 3 points at home, getting their 4th win in a row.
Brace by Mario Huber decides game in Villach
EC Red Bull Salzburg extended their lead at the top of the table with a hard-fought 2:1 road win in Villach. After six minutes Mario Huber scored the only goal in the first period on a rebound. In the middle frame Villach pressed for the equalizer but Red Bulls goalie JP Lamoureux had some great stops. With Brandon Maxwell having good saves at the other end, too, the period ended goalless. Huber added a second with a wraparound and then the hosts took high risk. With 1,8 seconds to go Schmidt broke the spell but it was too late.
Capitals earn three points in Vorarlberg
Thanks to a 3:2 win at Dornbirn, the spusu Vienna Capitals climbed to second place. Early in the game the hosts had good chances but Caps goalie Bernhard Starkbaum did well. In the 16th minute the visitors opened the scoring on powerplay with Kyle Baun making a deflection after a Kichton shot. The Caps had the better of the play also in the second and after the midway point of the game Riley Holzapfel made it 2:0. Soon later the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard, though. After a great pass by Emilio Romig, William Rapuzzi halved the deficit. In the third Mikko Vainonen tied it at two with a blue liner but just a few minutes later Caps top scorer Ty Loney found the back of the net for the game winner.
Black Wings hold the upper hand
Linz got off a great start with Brian Lebler litting the lamp for an early lead. The hosts kept the pace and Matt Finn doubled the score with his first goal in Erste Bank Eishockey Liga. Just before the first intermission Daniel Wachter finished a nice combination to bring Innsbruck on the scoreboard. Despite the Tirolese becoming much stronger in the second, Linz scored the next goal - 3:1 by Justin Florek. Sacha Guimond pulled one back and in the thid Jan Lattner even tied it at three. A McNeill goal got Linz back to winning ways and Marek Kalus added a fifth into the empty net. The last goal from Innsbruck captain Tyler Spurgeon came too late. On Monday the sharks play in Znojmo.
