Dornbirn and Vienna remain unbeaten

The Dornbirn Bulldogs and the Vienna Capitals remain unbeaten after four rounds in the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga. Reigning champion HCB Südtirol Alperia suffered its first defeat of the season, while losing against EC-KAC. The EHC LIWEST Black Wings Linz gained a shutout victory at EC Red Bull Salzburg. The Moser Medical Graz 99ers secured a 7:6 win after overtime against HC Orli Znojmo.

The Bulldogs showed their self confidence from the first minute on. Kevin Macierzynski converted the first chance for Dornbirn after less than three minutes played. While Villach, where Jason DeSantis was back in the team, became better and better, Macierzynski scored his second goal of the night, after a breakaway. Villach had some good chances later in the middle frame, but could not reduce the deficit, also because of Rasmus Rinner, who had 38 saves this game and a shutout in the end. A brace of Joel Broda in the last gave Dornbirn its fourth win of the season and the top position in standings. Villach suffered its first home defeat and is ranked 8th.

The Bears from Zagreb hosted the Vienna Capitals for second game in the packed Zibel Ice Hall in Sisak. The first period started with quick action on both ends of the rink. Both teams had one clear-cut chance but could not capitalize on either. In the second period the Bears took the lead on a give-and-go action from John Armstrong and Mario Puskarich. The Caps regrouped and equalized from a scramble before the goal in the 35th minute. The shot from the blue line ricocheted to Kelsy Tessier who had no problems beating Mathieu Corbeil from short distance. In the dying seconds of the second period Benjamin Nissner scored to give the Capitals the lead. In the third period the visitors were more active and it paid off in the 57th minute when Andreas Nödl sealed the deal capitalizing on a powerplay. The win secures the Caps the second spot in the standings, while Medvescak remains in the 11th spot.

The EHC LIWEST Black Wings Linz have celebrated its first victory of the season while beating vice-champion EC Red Bull Salzburg on the road 3:0. Salzburg suffered the third defeat so far and remains last in standings. Linz goalkeeper Michael Ouzas posted the first shutout of the season. On a four-on-four-situation Corey Locke gave Linz the lead after seven minutes played. The hosts had major problems on the offensive end. Linz was focused on defense and Michael Ouzas showed his quality minute by minute. Stefan Gaffal increased Linz’ lead early in the second. Locke rounded off the score later in the last.

The EC-KAC posted a 4:2 road win at Bozen. Reigning champion HCB Südtirol Alperia lost for the first time this season. The Italians are now fourth in standings, the KAC is ranked sixth. The champion started well: Timothy Campbell and Angelo Micelli used power plays to give Bozen a 2-goal-lead. Stefan Geier reduced the deficit about four minutes later in the first. With one goal down, the Carinthians came back in the second: First, Andrew Kozek potted the equalizer on a power play situation after a big mistake of Leland Irving. From now on the guests increased their speed and turned the game: Mitch Wahl took the lead for Klagenfurt and Manuel Geier doubled up about two minutes later. The “foxes” tried to come back in the last frame, but they could not use a double power play situation.

The Moser Medical Graz 99ers celebrated their third win in a row. The Styrians secured a 7:6 win after overtime against HC Orli Znojmo. Graz moved to the third spot in standings, while Znojmo is ranked 9th after they played only two games so far. The 99ers opened the game with three goals within the first three minutes, so that Znojmo substituted its goalkeepers. Graz held a two-goal lead in a high-scoring game till two minutes before the end (6:4). Than the guests scored twice within 25 seconds and tied up the game. In the end Graz secured a tight overtime win, after Ken Ograjensek scored his second goal of the night.
