Both Vienna and Graz were not able to start the game with their best players. The Styrians, with Andrew Gordon and Dominik Grafenthin missing, looked more active in the first minutes. Then they were confronted with a first shorthanded situation and the "Caps" took advantage of, as James Sheppard (6./PP1) made his eighth goal of the season, recorded his 20th point. He beat Engstrand with a slightly deflected shot. In the further curse of the first, Vienna controlled action.

There were hardly any scoring chances in the second period, as the game was a little bit tedious, with little intensity and a lot of turnovers. Vienna then became dangerous again at the beginning of the final period, on the power play, but could not double up. Graz tried hard, then had good opportunities for the equalizer in the last ten minutes, but could not overcome Bernhard Starkbaum, as he made 19 saves to secure the home victory for the Viennese. For the sixth time in a row, Graz had to admit defeat in the Steffl Arena.
