For the second time in the history of the Champions Hockey League, EC Red Bull Salzburg has reached the quarter-finals. The current champions of the win2day ICE Hockey League will face the best team in the league phase, Färjestad Karlstad, who are also very good in the domestic league league as second. They have won all of their last five league games. Salzburg, by comparison, have won six of their last seven matches in the win2day ICE Hockey League and are in third place.

In the Champions Hockey League, the Swedes narrowly beat Tappara Tampere in the round of 16. After a 3:2 away win in the first leg, they suffered a 2:3 defeat in the second leg, which meant the game went into extra time. The Swedes scored the winner after just under three minutes. They held the upper hand in all six games in the league phase. Salzburg also beat a Finnish team in the round of 16, but had far fewer problems than Färjestad. After a 2:1 away win at the Lahti Pelicans, the Red Bulls clearly had the upper hand at home with 5:0.
