The win2day ICE Hockey League is entering its final week of the regular season - and there are still plenty of decisions to be made. Who will be regular season champion, who will secure the first two Champions Hockey League spots? Which teams will secure their quarter-final ticket? We have summarized all possible scenarios for you: >> TO THE POSSIBLE SCENARIOS <<
Steinbach Black Wings Linz - EC-KAC
While fifth-placed Linz are still fighting for the early playoff qualification, the EC-KAC can secure the Regular Season win and CHL participation on Sunday. Klagenfurt are currently six points ahead of their closest rivals Salzburg and Bolzano, while Linz are three points ahead of seventh-placed VSV. The Upper Austrians were beaten 1:2/OT in Ljubljana on Friday - their first defeat after three wins in a row. Klagenfurt, on the other hand, are currently the strongest team in the league and are on a six-game winning streak. They have won two of their three games against the Black Wings so far this season.
Moser Medical Graz99ers - HC Pustertal
Graz ends the Regular Season on Sunday against Pustertal. In sixth place in the table, the Styrians currently have a three-point lead over seventh-placed Villach, who still have two games to play. Pustertal are already guaranteed a place in the pre-playoffs as ninth in the table. The South Tyroleans celebrated a 3:2/OT home win in the derby against Bolzano on Friday. It was their first win after five defeats in a row. Graz also won 3:2 after extra time in Salzburg, making it one of three wins from the last five games. The 99ers have won all three duels against Pustertal so far this season.
Olimpija Ljubljana - EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV
Villach, who are seventh in the table, urgently need a win at Ljubljana to stay in the race for the top six. Two games before the end of the Regular Season, VSV is three points behind sixth place. While Villach were free from play on Friday, eighth-placed Olimpija celebrated their fourth win in a row with a 2:1/OT home win against Linz. VSV are also in strong form and have won five of their last six games. The “Eagles” have also been victorious in their last three away games. In the “Karawanken derby” against Ljubljana, however, they have been beaten in two of the three duels so far this season.
Before the game against Villach, Olimpija Ljubljana has strengthened its squad with the addition of Canadian Shawn Lalonde. The 34-year-old defenseman has already played in the DEL, KHL and SHL, among others. He also played one game in the NHL for the Chicago Blackhawks.
Hydro Fehérvár AV19 - HCB Südtirol Alperia
Bolzano was beaten 2:3/OT in the derby at Pustertal on Friday, but still secured its place in the playoffs. The South Tyroleans are third in the table, six points behind leader Klagenfurt and just two points ahead of Fehérvár. The Hungarians are on the brink of direct play-off qualification, five points ahead of seventh place, but are currently not in top form and have only won one of their last five league games. Fehérvár have already lost two out of three matches against Bolzano this season.
EC Red Bull Salzburg - Migross Supermercati Asiago Hockey
Salzburg and Asiago will also face each other on Sunday. The game will be streamed for free on www.live.ice.hockey and www.joyn.at from 16:30. The second placed team from Salzburg are six points behind leaders Klagenfurt with three games to go in the Regular Season. Salzburg have only won two of their last five games and suffered a 2:2/OT home defeat against Graz on Friday. Twelfth-placed Asiago have also won two of their last five games, but have recently suffered clear defeats against Klagenfurt and Bolzano. However, the Italians have been very successful against the Red Bulls this season, winning two of their three encounters so far, most recently on February 11 with a 4:3 shootout victory.
