Four home wins open the playoffs

On Wednesday the home teams had a perfect start into the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga playoffs and snatched up the 1:0 lead in the best-of-seven quarterfinal series. The spusu Vienna Capitals and Fehervar AV19 each celebrated a shutout, while the Moser Medical Graz 99ers showed a great performance on powerplay. Andrew Kozek’s brace gave the EC-KAC an overtime win, after trailing three times against HCB Südtirol Alperia.

Erste Bank Eishockey Liga, Quarterfinal #1 (best of seven):
Fehervar AV19 (4.) vs. EC Red Bull Salzburg (5.) 1:0 (1:0, 0:0, 0:0)

Fehervar AV19 celebrated a 1:0 win against EC Red Bull Salzburg after a solid defensiv performance. The guests had the better start but the Hungarians were able to defend very well. With four minutes left in the first period it was Sofron who passed to Koskiranta in front of the net, the Finnish forward did not miss, putting his team up one goal. The Bulls tried everything and had a few good chances. Dominique Heinrich missed the biggest chance when his shot hit the crossbar. At the end of the game Salzburg recieved a two minutes penalty but Fehervar did not push for another goal. Salzburg could not tie the game in the remaining time.

The spusu Vienna Capitals had a great start into the Playoffs of the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga, after cruising past HC Orli Znojmo 7:0. With Chris DeSousa having four points the top-ranked Capitals took over the lead in the “best-of-seven” series. The hosts controlled the game right from the beginning and Taylor Vause opened the scoring after three minutes. It was all Vienna in the first, after Christopher DeSousa increased the lead with a brace and Peter Schneider potted the 4:0 twenty seconds to go in the opening frame. With DeSousa’s third goal Vienna made the preliminary decision right at the beginning of the second. Patrick Peter scored the 6th Caps-goal still in the second, while Sondre Olden rounded off the score early in the last. Znojmo gained some more chances in the final frame, but JP Lamoureux kept his sheet clean and got a shutout.

Moser Medical Graz 99ers : EHC Liwest Black Wings Linz – 7:3 (1:1, 4:1, 2:1)

The Moser Medical Graz 99ers celebrated a great 7:3 win against the EHC Liwest Black Wings Linz after a furios second period. In a very high-paced game both teams had a good start. Tied at one the second period started and Linz took the lead. The hometeam started to play more offensive and was able to turn the game around with four goals during the second period. In the last period the guests pulled one back but at the end of the day the hometeam dominated and controlled the game. With two more goals during the last period the Graz 99ers showed a great performance and now lead the series with 1:0.

Erste Bank Eishockey Liga, Quarterfinal #1 (best of seven):
EC-KAC – HCB Südtirol Alperia 5:4 OT (1:1, 2:2, 1:1, 1:0)
Referees: GARON, ZRNIC, Kotschieder, Nothegger; Attendance: 3.192

The EC-KAC won its home game against the HCB Südtirol Alperia with 5:4 after overtime. After equalizing the score three times in a row, the hometeam finally took the lead after Thomas Koch`s goal. Anton Bernard, who scored twice, was able to balance the score for the guests later in the last. Andrew Kozek made the decisive goal for the Austrians after 44 seconds in overtime. Although hitting the crossbar a few times during the game, the KAC-forward kept going and finally scored twice, made one assist and decided the game for the hometeam. The EC-KAC now took over the lead in the "best-of-seven-series".
