Gardena had just one win from five games before Tuesday's encounter. Second-placed Red Bull Hockey, on the other hand, had previously won three matches in a row. The game was evenly matched for long stretches. After a goalless first period, the visitors took the lead in the 22nd minute through Daniel Assavolyuk. However, the South Tyroleans turned the game in their favour in the final period. Yuri Cristellon equalised in the 45th minute and Simon Pitschieler made it 2:1 just 71 seconds later. 3:1 by Brad McGowan (51') looked to be the decider, but the Juniors came back once more. Lukas Hörl brought Salzburg to within one goal, but in the final phase the Gardena defence around goalie Paul Hofer saved the narrow lead over time.
