Release from 16.09.2022
The HC TIWAG Innsbruck - Die Haie is the first leaders of the 2022-23 win2day ICE Hockey League season, as a strong middle frame helped the Tyroleans to a 5-2 opening win over EC-KAC. A successful debut was recorded by league newcomer Migross Supermercati Asiago Hockey, which made their debut in Graz with a 3-2 win. ICE MVP Peter Schneider netted the game-winner for defending champions EC Red Bull Salzburg with 14 seconds left, while HCB Südtirol Alperia celebrated a shutout win at home. Hydro Fehérvár AV19 and Steinbach Black Wings Linz also had successful season openers.
For the third time in a row, HC TIWAG Innsbruck - Die Haie won their opening game and picked up points in their first game of the season for the eighth consecutive time. On Friday, Mitch O'Keefe's team celebrated an unchallenged 5-2 victory against EC-KAC, which missed former regular season MVP Sebastian Dahm. The "Haie" provided the preliminary decision in the highest-scoring encounter of the first gameday in the last eight minutes of the middle frame: Corey Mackin (33.), Daniel Leavens (36./PP1) and Tyler Coulter (39./SH1) netted. Leavens is the lone player to score two goals on the first game day.
Asiago wins on debut
Migross Supermercati Asiago Hockey claimed a 3-2 road win at Moser Medical Graz99ers in its ICE debut, as the newcomers turned around an early deficit with goals from Mcshane (14.) and Saracino (38./SH1). The equalizer by Zalewski (49./SH1) was answered by Salinitri 102 seconds left. Randal Gazzola dished three assists for Asiago.
The second league newcomer BEMER Pioneers Vorarlberg, meanwhile, suffered a defeat, losing at HCB Südtirol Alperia with 0:3. For the South Tyroleans, Andreas Bernard provided the first shutout of the season with 22 saves. Mitch Hults (4th) and Miglioranzi (6th) put the "Foxes" on course with two early goals.
MVP gives Salzburg perfect opener
It is thanks to Peter Schneider that defending champion EC Red Bull Salzburg managed a successful start into the new season. After two goalless periods, Chay Genoway (41./PP1) put the Salzburg side in the lead via a blueliner on the powerplay. But Niki Hartl (56.) let the Viennese equalize until Peter Schneider provided the game-winner 14 seconds left - giving the reigning champions a 2-1 home win over the spusu Vienna Capitals.
Vice-champion Hydro Fehérvár AV19 had an equally successful start, winning 4:1 at HC Pustertal Wölfe. The Hungarians' offensive power of 43 shots on goal made itself felt on the scoreboard for the first time at the beginning of the second period: Csanad Erdely (22nd) converted a rebound. Shortly before the second break, Andrew Sarauer (39th) doubled after a no-look pass from Kristof Nemeth. Fehérvár responded to the South Tyrolean goal by Marc-Olivier Roy (44th) with two more goals in the last ten minutes of the game.
Lebler and Kristler score in Linz‘ win
Last year's bottom-placed team, Steinbach Black Wings Linz, made a perfect start to the new season with a 2-1 home win over EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV. Power forward Brian Lebler (1.) let Philipp Lukas' team cheer already after 37 seconds. Andreas Kristler (33./PP1) doubled the score after a one-timer during the first powerplay. Elias Wallenta (45.) gave the “Adler” a chance to tie the game, but new Linz goalie Rasmus Tirronen finished strong.
