Both Innsbruck (4:3 in Bruneck) and Znojmo (5:1 in Dornbirn) recorded victories less than 24 hours before the direct duel. On Saturday, the home side initially took command and took the lead in the only power play of the first period through Daniel Leavens (10.). In a fast-paced encounter, Znojmo goalkeeper Dominik Groh saved his team from a higher deficit. The home side also set the tone in the middle period. The Innsbruck team created good chances and was also lucky with Zach Magwood's 2:0 when the puck went off a Czech's skate into the net. The 23-year-old Canadian thus scored for the third game in a row.

In the final period, the guests came up with better opportunities and created more danger for HCI goalie Tom McCollum's goal. After Innsbruck missed the decision due to a great save by Groh, Adam Sedlak reduced the score to 2:1 in the 57th minute. The guests took full risk in the final minute, but even with a sixth skater they could not equalize. Thus, HC TIWAG Innsbruck, now in fourth place, celebrated their third successive win.
